- Continue work on the annotated bibliography assignment.
- Old media focus: Travel media - Write annotated bibliography entries for one sample of travel media.

Wed. Feb. 6
- 20 min. silent reading OR complete your paragraph from yesterday on a media topic.
- Discuss MLA annotated bibliography format. Review the annotated bibliography assignment.
- Old media focus: Travel media - Write annotated bibliography entries for one sample of travel media.

Tues. Feb. 5
- 20 min. silent reading OR complete your paragraph from yesterday on a media topic.
- Review formal and informal writing style comparison notes. Underline the seven most important characteristics of each and create a Venn diagram outline in preparation for a paragraph that contrasts formal and informal writing styles (point of view; subject; tone; structure; thesis placement; vocabulary; purpose).
- Write a paragraph contrasting formal and informal writing styles.

Mon. Feb. 4 - Welcome to English 11.

- Hand in the documentary reflection assignment.
- The documentary Fractured Land by BC filmmaker Damien Gillis is currently in development and looks at the controversial issue of fracking in Northern British Columbia.
- This documentary film and many other  "indie films" are being funded through Indiegogo.

 
Wed. Jan 16 and Thurs. Jan 17
- Documentary film is an effective storytelling medium that is increasingly focused on social, political, and environmental issues / activism.
- We will be viewing The Last Mountain, which tells the story of controversial mountaintop removal mining practices used in West Virginia (the setting of the novel October Sky).
- Start work on the documentary reflection chart and paragraph responses.



Tues. Jan.15
- The book October Sky educates readers about the early years of the space race in the 1950s. Watch Our Generation's Space Race.
- Read the article Mining On the Moon.  Why would Canada be well-positioned for this new space race? 
- Then continue reading October Sky and completing Ch. 3-8 assignments.

- Finish reading chapter 14 for Tuesday.
