Thurs. Sept. 30/10 - The Alchemist

- Blk. B: Questions and notes on the introduction and prologue.
- Become familiar with the author Paulo Coelho. Review the biographical article.
- Continue reading The Alchemist from p. 10.

Wed. Sept. 29/10 - The Alchemist / Panel Presenters

- Panel discussion on media celebrity activism (students who selected this option).
- Review the elements of fiction.
- Read to the introduction (complete ques. 1-4) and read the prologue (take notes).


Tues. Sept. 28/10

- The K-Library computer lab is booked for this class.
- You'll be investigating the DIY Doco interactive documentary storytelling website (use ear buds).
- In the last 10 - 15 minutes of class, go to the interactive quiz and test yourself. Fill in the correct responses on your worksheet. Hand it in for a completion score of 10 marks.
- Tomorrow, we'll start The Alchemist.

Fri. Sept. 24/10 - Media, Celebrity, Global Activism


- The K-library computer lab is booked this class.
- You will either type your three paragraph persuasive essay about celebrity activism, or prepare to participate in a panel discussion on this topic on Wed. Sept. 29th.
- Your completed  3 paragraph essay outline will assist you in responding to the topic question:

  Is media celebrity participation in global charity work motivated by altruism or self-promotion?
  • Altruism (the quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others)
  • Self-promotion (bragging or otherwise attempting to make oneself appear greater)



Thurs. Sept. 23/10 - Media / Documentary


- Silent reading 20 minutes / crossword completion.
- Read the article "Hollywood Stars Rush To Do Their Bit."
- Complete the 3 paragraph essay outline (decide whether you will complete a typed essay or prepare to participate in a panel discussion in class on Wednesday).
  •  Essay question: Is media celebrity participation in global charity work motivated by altruism or self-promotion?
  • Altruism (the quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others)

- Write three (3) different thesis statements related to the following question:
  •  Is media celebrity participation in global charity work motivated by altruism or self-promotion?
    • Altruism (the quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others)
    • Self-promotion (bragging or otherwise attempting to make oneself appear greater) 


Tues. Sept. 21/10 - Media, Celebrity and Global Activism
View and discuss the video "The Bonoization of Aid."
Complete these two tasks in the computer lab:

 - **Review the media representation piece from the United Nations Refugee Agency. Write point form responses on the deconstructing media handout.
- **Visit Look to the Stars and complete the celebrity information chart for any five people.
**Both tasks due as homework for Fri., Sept. 24th's class.
 

Mon. Sept. 20/10: Media and Fraud

- silent reading
- peer edit English 10 paragraphs
- Start the RCMP Media Fraud crossword puzzle (see booklet: RCMP Student Fraud Guide)
**Tomorrow, we'll be in the computer lab to investigate media celebrity activism.

Fri. Sept. 17/10 - Media Awareness / Essay Revision and Completion

The K Library computer lab is booked for this class. Complete the good copy of your five paragraph essay.
When finished, you can find the documentary Militainment, Inc. online. Or, look for another documentary on a topic of interest to you. Consult the documentary database.

Thurs. Sept. 16/10 - Media Awareness / Essay Revision and Completion

We'll review the topic of militainment from yesterday's class and learn about the new media power of the WikiLeaks organization and website.
Peer edited essays will be returned for revision and completion. These will be typed in the lab on Friday.


Wed. Sept. 15/10 - Media Awareness / Peer Editing

Today, we'll review the purpose of peer editing and practice editing first draft essays / paragraphs from other classes.



We will view this investigative report about the connections between the media and the military.

- Today, we'll consider a couple of recent editorials on the Wi-Fi in schools news coverage. This story was investigated on CBC's The National on Sept. 8/10.
- We'll review the five paragraph essay outline, introductory paragraph and thesis development.
