Oct. 6 - 10: The Alchemist


Fri. Oct. 10

Mrs. Hopkins is absent today. The teacher on call will show class the Biography documentary, William Shakespeare: A Life of Drama.

Thurs. Oct. 9:  Media Celebrity Activism: Is It Altruism or Self-Promotion?

We've touched on the power of celebrity endorsement when analyzing the huge success of Paulo Coelho's novel, The Alchemist. Celebrities may influence our reading selections and the attention we pay to other issues in the media. Today, we'll extend our look at the influence of celebrities. You'll be researching and deconstructing media to explore the question of whether celebrity activism is an altruistic or self-promotional activity.

Complete these two tasks in the computer lab:
  1. **Visit Look to the Stars and complete the celebrity information chart (page 8) for any five people.
  2.  **Review the media representation piece from the United Nations Refugee Agency. Write point form responses on the deconstructing media handout (page 9)
**Both tasks (25 marks) due for Tues. Oct.14

 


Wed. Oct. 8
- Continue writing your four paragraph literary analysis synthesis essay. All materials provided in class.

Tues. Oct. 7
- Process and Practice reading p. 6 - 14
- writing strategy practice: lists, webs, thesis statements (work in partners, groups or alone). Save your notes for possible inclusion on this week's in-class essay.
- Start work on the in-class literary analysis synthesis essay.


Mon. Oct. 6 - The Alchemist     The Alchemist audiobook 
- Visit the 15 stations posted around the room. Read and discuss the quotes at each station; then, write a response to the question at each station on the debriefing activity sheet.  Hand in the completed sheet at the end of the class.
- Sentence error identification quiz.
