May 9 - 13: Macbeth

FINAL MARKING DEADLINE for overdue April Term 4 work is Mon. May 9, 2016 (Poetry Blog, Sonnet, Interview Poem)
Wed. May 11 - Thursday May 12: In-class essay on Macbeth's character.
Fri. May 13: 100 mark multiple choice test on Macbeth (review the practice quizzes posted last week).

- 40 min. of study, homework or essay completion time. The test will start at 12:15.
- Multiple choice Macbeth test (100). Remember to review the four practice quizzes on last week's post.
- Use any remaining class time to finish the in-class character analysis essay on Macbeth or complete overdue assignments.

Wed, May 11 - Thurs. May 12, 2016 Macbeth Online Play

-  Students write the in-class five paragraph essay on Macbeth's character.
-  You can use the hardcover Macbeth textbook, your single sheet outline and your primary / secondary source sheets. The assignment instruction sheet and the marking criteria sheet will be provided in class.
- Essay Thesis Statement (include at the end of your introduction paragraph):
  • Macbeth displays conflicting traits and behaviors that are revealed through his roles as military general, husband, and king.
Mon. May 9 - Tues. May 10 , 2016

- View the Roman Polanski directed movie of Macbeth.

- Start work on the Macbeth character analysis essay outline.
- Read "Macbeth: The Man" pp. xx-xxiii
- Review Macbeth's character traits below:

  1. Military General (trusted, brave, loyal, noble, courageous, respected, and skilled; capable of killing in battle; seen as protector; takes pride in his actions; influenced by witches, mentally stable; has friends and is part of a fraternity of Thanes)
  2. Husband (faithful/ loving toward wife; wants to please wife and have her think he is manly; influenced/manipulated by wife; ambitious; experiences self-doubt/remorse over plotting, decisions and actions; realizes his desires are corrupt; his anxiety over Duncan's murder leads to emotional torment/hallucinations; poisonous partnership)
  3. King (not virtuous; corruptly crowned; suspicious, paranoid, self-centred, distrustful, and vengeful; insomniac; mentally unstable; becomes increasingly murderous; detached and alone)
